A Botanical Liniment for the Weary
Don’t let the name fool you—there is no trickery to be found here. Our Snake Oil Salve is a robust, warming "rub-on" preparation designed for those who work hard and feel it in their bones. This is a traditional "fire and ice" salve, combining the deep, circulating heat of home-grown peppers with the bracing chill of peppermint.
We begin with a slow, solar-infusion of Clove, Frankincense, Ginger, and our own Home-Grown Cayenne, drawing out the vital resins and heat into a base of Castor Oil. This thick, protective oil acts as a "long-wear" carrier, ensuring the botanicals stay on the skin where they are needed most. Thickened with local beeswax and finished with a breath of Eucalyptus, it is the ultimate companion for the bedside table or the tool chest.
The Ingredient Breakdown
The Warming Trio (Cayenne, Ginger, Clove): These "rubefacient" herbs create a gentle, localized warming sensation, encouraging a sense of flow and vitality to the area applied.
Frankincense Resin: Historically prized for its "grounding" properties and its ability to soothe the appearance of weathered skin.
Mallow Leaf & Root: Provides a "slippery" emollient quality that balances the heat of the peppers, protecting the skin's moisture barrier.
Milk Thistle Seeds: A hardy antioxidant boost to support skin resilience.
Castor Oil & Beeswax: A heavy-duty duo that provides a protective seal, allowing the essential oils to linger longer.
Peppermint & Eucalyptus: Provides an immediate cooling "thaw" to balance the deep heat of the infusion.
A Smidge of History: The Truth Behind the "Snake Oil"
The term "Snake Oil" has a bit of a checkered past. In the 1800s, traveling salesmen—often called "mountebanks"—would stand on crates in the town square, claiming their tinctures could cure everything from baldness to broken hearts. Most were nothing more than flavored water or harsh chemicals.
However, the original snake oil was a highly respected remedy brought over by Chinese laborers, used for centuries to soothe the hands and joints of workers. Our Snake Oil Salve pays homage to the authentic spirit of the frontier apothecary: utilizing the potent, raw power of the garden to create a balm that actually works as hard as you do. No miracles promised—just honest plants and hard work.
The Routine: Massage a small amount into the desired area (knees, elbows, or lower back) until a warm tingle. Wash hands immediately after each application.
Handle with Care & Respect
While our Snake Oil Salve is crafted for the rugged and the hardworking, it contains potent, "fiery" botanicals. Please observe the following precautions:
The Fire & The Eyes: This salve contains home-grown Cayenne Pepper and Clove. Under no circumstances should this product come into contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, or other sensitive "soft" skin. We recommend washing your hands with soap and cool water immediately after application.
The Patch Test: Due to the warming nature of Ginger and Cayenne, a small patch test is essential. A mild warming sensation and slight redness are common and intended, but if you experience intense burning or a rash, wash the area with oil (like olive or coconut) first to dilute the pepper, then soap and water.
Not a Medical Miracle: In the spirit of the old frontier, we promise no miracles. This product is a cosmetic liniment designed to provide a warming sensation to the skin. It has not been evaluated by the FDA and is not intended to treat, cure, or diagnose any medical condition, including chronic joint or nerve pain.
Keep Out of Reach of Little Ones: Due to the "heat" of the ingredients, please keep this jar far out of the reach of children and pets.
Consult Your Physician: If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a pre-existing skin condition, please seek the advice of a medical professional before use.
